The Georgia Library Association Carterette Series Webinars presents:

Solving Heavy Problems in Light-Hearted Ways

    Wednesday, February 4, 2026
    2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central)
    Cost: Free

Description: Library leaders can face some thorny problems when managing organizational change. This is particularly true at institutions with a long-established workplace culture who aim to make effective change across departments. Sometimes, we tend to forget when undertaking difficult projects that you don’t have to have an overly serious attitude when undertaking serious tasks. Bringing in creativity and play can open minds to break outside of established ways of thinking and doing.

In this webinar, two department heads from the University of Central Florida Libraries will share how they developed a series of fun and interactive activities to develop a new divisional structure across departments to encourage collaboration and shared decision making. Instead of leading with a pre-defined structure for the organizational change, existing challenges were used as a starting point for the conversation and change management. The activities helped cultivate an open mind set to ensure participants felt empowered to be co-creators in innovative solutions. Webinar attendees will be provided with an overview of the process, considerations to develop these activities within their own contexts, and example activities participants can take to their own organizations to help foster collaboration on difficult issues.

    About the Presenters:

Lauren Kehoe (she/her) is the Department Head for Research Engagement at University of Central Florida Libraries. She supports a team of 10 academic librarians and one staff member.  The department is part of Academic Engagement, which works very closely with the Learning Engagement department to provide research, instruction, and outreach services. Previously, she served as the Accessibility and Accommodations Librarian at New York University Libraries, and the Undergraduate Instruction and Outreach Librarian before that. She's been a librarian for 16 years, beginning her career in a large urban public library system and moving into academic librarianship early in her career.  Her research interests include accessibility in libraries, critical pedagogy and librarianship, and making, collecting, describing, and discovering zines in the library.

Katy Miller is the Department Head for Learning Engagement at the University of Central Florida Libraries. In this role she oversees a team of nine librarians who focus on research, instruction, and outreach. She has 16 years of experience in academic libraries at both a community college and a top research university. Her prior role at UCF was the Textbook Affordability/Student Success Librarian, where she advocated and collaborated with faculty to develop open and low-cost instructional materials. Before joining UCF, she worked as a Title V grant Project Director for the East Campus of Valencia College and Library Director for Valencia’s Winter Park Campus. Her areas of focus are information literacy, student engagement, user experience, and online learning.
